Body found in Marblehead that of missing Peabody man, authorities say

The long search for a man reported missing from Peabody last month has come to a sad end.

“A body discovered Thursday on the shore near Edgemere Road in Marblehead has been positively identified as that of a missing Peabody man,” Essex DA Paul Tucker and the chiefs of the Marblehead, Salem and Peabody police departments announced Saturday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has concluded that the body is Michael Gray, 31, whose family reported him missing on Dec. 11.

His clothes were found near Juniper Beach in Salem before he was even reported missing, according to a Jan. 4 update by the Salem Police, who had conducted a search in the water along that beach that day.

Local dive teams and State Police searched for Gray for several days around that beach to no luck, according to the DA’s office. His body was finally discovered Thursday by a woman walking her dog in Marblehead.

The Peabody PD tweeted on Dec. 12 that Gray was last seen Dec. 10 when police tried to help him gain entry into his locked car. Failing that, police gave him a ride to a family member’s workplace on Main Street.

The case remains under investigation by detectives from the Peabody and Salem police departments and State Police troopers assigned to the DA’s office.
