Celtics forward Grant Williams was fined $20,000 by the NBA on Monday after punching the ball into the stands that resulted in his ejection late in Saturday night’s blowout loss to the Warriors.
With 1:52 left in the game and the Celtics trailing by 17, Steph Curry took a shot after a whistle that bounced off the backboard. The ball fell to Williams, who was standing in the paint and punched the ball, which landed somewhere in the seats. That action is an automatic ejection, per league rules, which Williams didn’t know. He was not frustrated, and looked surprised when official Scott Foster told him.
“The ejection was one of those things you could definitely control,” Williams told MassLive on Monday. “I went to go punch the ball off the backboard. Let’s just say it didn’t go my way. When Scott (Foster) told me it’s an automatic ejection, I said, ‘No way; I didn’t know that.’ It was one of those things where it was just like you couldn’t help yourself. It’s all good. It doesn’t affect things moving forward; it just hurts your pockets a little bit.”
It was Williams’ second ejection of the season. The Celtics’ fourth-year forward was also tossed for inadvertently bumping into an official during a loss to the Bulls in October, which resulted in a one-game suspension.
