WEDNESDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS
WRESTLING
Bolstered by winning efforts from the Tildsley brothers, Shawsheen held off Haverhill, 159.5-158.5, to win the prestigious George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament. James Tildsley pinned Phoenix Gardella of Norwalk (Conn.) in 1:21 to capture the 126-pound title, while Sidney Tildsley won the 138-pound title with a 9-3 win over Tyler Kadish of Newton South.
Haverhill was led by 160-pound standout Brett Nicolosi, who defeated Chelmsford’s Jack Walsh 20-8 to win his weight class. Central Catholic finished third with 140.5, narrowly ahead of Chelmsford (140).
Chelmsford sophomore Thomas Brown earned Outstanding Wrestler honors for the upper weight classes as he defended his heavyweight title with an impressive 4-1 win over Hampton Kaye-Kuter of Milford.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Luke Rinaldi dropped 19 points, while Brian Olson (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Mason Melchionda (10 points, 11 rebounds) each notched double-doubles for Dover-Sherborn (5-0) in a 63-48 nonleague win over Nipmuc. … Michael Porter dropped 24 points and Dawit Quilty added 21 to lift Scituate pats Abington, 73-50.
Senior Josh Campbell scored 26 points, leading Archbishop Williams (5-0) to an 85-64 win over Duxbury in the championship game of the Titan Classic in Pembroke.
In the MC Christmas Tournament first round, Nick Martinez notched 24 points as Malden Catholic (4-0) outlasted Bishop Guertin 77-44.
In the Bob Bigelow tournament, Matt Richardson finished with 26 points as Masconomet (4-1) defeated Snowden International, 59-49.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Emily Collins had 12 points, 14 rebounds and six steals as Winchester (5-0) defeated Boston Latin 52-22 in the opening round of the Bob Bigelow Tournament. …Marci Bonfardeci and Luna Murray combined for 30 points, while Mary Turco pulled down 18 rebounds as Malden Catholic edged Concord-Carlisle, 53-49.
In the Oliver Ames Christmas Tournament, Kate Olenik dropped 28 points and six assists as Medfield (4-0) downed Bishop Fenwick 70-44.
GIRLS HOCKEY
In the Bay State Conference, Morgan Roach netted a hat trick and Molly Federico scored the game-winner in overtime as Norwood outlasted Walpole 6-5.
FOOTBALL
The 2022 MHSFCA All-State Football Team was announced earlier Wednesday night. The 26-man team was selected by a committee of coaches from the MHSFCA Executive Board. The team will be honored at a banquet co-sponsored by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston and the MHSFCA. The banquet will be held at the Burlington Marriott on Sunday, March 12 at 4 p.m
The team consisted of quarterbacks Tucker McDonald (Wachusett),James Murphy (Reading) and William Watson (Springfield Central), running backs David Brown (St. Mary’s), Carson Harwood (Catholic Memorial) and Datrell Jones (Catholic Memorial), receivers Ian Dixon (Wakefield) and Jesse Ofurie (St. John’s Prep) and offensive linemen Jayden Bass (Springfield Central ), Case Mankins (Bishop Feehan), Jon Mould (Xaverian), Danny Thompson (Scituate) and Josh Troiano (Seekonk).
The defensive linemen are Josiah Griffin ( Springfield Central), Jaden Wiggins (Central Catholic), Chris Sesay (King Philip) and Braden Marceau-Olayinka (Melrose), linebackers Lincoln Beal (Andover), Owen Howlett (Milton Academy), Angelo LaRose (Worcester South) and Preston Zinter (Central Catholic) and defensive backs Joenel Aguero (St. John’s Prep), Liam Donagher (Grafton), Joey Duggan (Nobles), Eric Miles (Bedford) and Owen McHugh (Milton).
