GOP takeover could sweep away Massachusetts Democrats’ clout – Boston Herald

A potential Republican electoral wave next week could sweep away Massachusetts Democrats’ plum leadership posts while further isolating and marginalizing liberal elected leaders.

The Bay State will look more and more like a lonely liberal outpost if Republicans are successful in taking over Congress and key governor’s seats. The state long known as one of the most far left in the country could be one of the few success stories for Democrats on Election Day next Tuesday.

But the impact of a GOP takeover will not be pretty here. A lot of egos will be bruised and hopes of power crushed.

U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, who likes to refer to herself as “assistant speaker” (she is technically one of the assistant speakers) would lose that coveted title and instead be relegated to “assistant minority leader” – not quite as impressive.

U.S. Rep. Richard Neal would lose his esteemed title as Ways and Means Chairman, a powerful post that has given him a key role on laws like the American Rescue Plan Act and the investigations into Donald Trump’s taxes.

Also losing his beloved “chairman” title would be Jim McGovern, a Worcester Democrat who now runs the House Rules Committee, a little known but influential panel that determines when legislation goes through Congress.

If the Senate turns red, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will look even more like a left wing ranter with even less national clout than she has now. Warren’s popularity even in the Bay State has been bruised by her unsuccessful run for the presidency.

Same goes for Sen. Ed Markey.

Democratic gubernatorial favorite Maura Healey will likely move even further to the Charlie Baker center to protect herself, leaving liberals out in the cold.

Even progressive stars like Boston Mayor Michelle Wu may find her policies looking more and more out of step with the rest of the country.

And with media outlets like CNN and Twitter moving to the right, Democrats won’t even have those shoulders to cry on should Republicans seize control.

Democrats’ strategy will be to attack, attack, attack Republicans to cover the indisputable fact that they were rejected at the polls.

And President Biden will face numerous investigations from Republicans eager to inflict payback for all the probes into Donald Trump.
