An “innocent bystander” died after being struck by a stray bullet during a shooting at the Holyoke Mall over the weekend, according to police who arrested a suspect and assigned extra officers to the mall on Sunday.
“The victim was an innocent bystander to a confrontation between two other people,” the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
Holyoke Police officers responded to the shooting at the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside on Saturday at around 6:59 p.m. Upon arrival, police found a male victim at the scene, and a suspect was immediately taken into custody. Police did not immediately name the victim and suspect.
Holyoke Police after the shooting reiterated that it was an isolated incident, and that there was no ongoing public safety threat.
Police assigned extra officers inside and outside the mall on Sunday. Police said they hope to be able to sustain that extra presence going forward.
Pyramid Management Group, owner of Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, said in a statement, “We do not condone violence of any kind in our community.”
“We are actively cooperating with law-enforcement in the investigation of this incident and understand that the suspect was immediately taken into custody and that there is no ongoing public safety threat as it relates to this incident,” Pyramid added. “Our thoughts this evening remain with the victim and their family during this difficult time.”
The homicide investigation is being conducted by the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden DA’s Office.
