Julissa Brisman’s mom ‘beside herself’ over Philip Markoff’s jail suicide

This story was first published in the Herald on August 16, 2010.

Julissa Brisman’s devastated family — already heartbroken by her vicious murder in a swanky Boston hotel room last year — is now holding out hope alleged Craigslist killer Philip Markoff left a tell-all note before apparently killing himself inside his jail cell.

“It would be so wonderful if he finally admitted his guilt,” said Mark Pines, a New York City musician and close friend of the late Julissa Brisman.

Pines said he spent most of yesterday morning consoling Brisman’s mother, Carmen Guzman, who was crushed to learn that the man accused of killing her 25-year-old daughter would not stand trial.

“She’s beside herself,” said Pines, who admitted to having “mixed” feelings about Markoff’s death.

“There’s some relief, because it’s a form of closure, but it’s not true closure,” he said.

“A trial would have been grueling and heartstopping, but it would have provided closure.”

Markoff, 24, a former Boston University medical student, was found dead of an apparent suicide at the Nashua Street Jail yesterday morning.

He had been behind bars since April 2009, awaiting trial for Brisman’s murder. He was also facing separate armed robbery charges in Boston and Rhode Island.

On Saturday, some 400 mourners gathered in Milford, Conn., to remember Brisman and other victims of violence, Pines said.

There, Pines performed his song, “For the Sake of a Getaway,” which he said he wrote for Brisman. The point of the song, he said, is that he believes Brisman was killed so her attacker could escape.

Prosecutors have said she was killed in a doorway at the Marriott Copley Hotel in downtown Boston, after trying to fight off her killer. A nearby hotel guest saw her body strewn across the entrance to her room and called for help.

Pines takes solace in the fact Brisman wouldn’t give up.

“She was tough, and she came back at him,” he said.

“I hope Philip Markoff is once again face-to-face with Julissa, for a brief moment, before he goes to hell,” he said.
