Canceling student loans
Re: “Elizabeth Warren should target high college costs,” Aug. 12, and “Fresh Start” on College Loans by Howie Carr, Aug. 21
Politicians once again are showing their true colors by pandering and indulging in fringe issues such as student loan cancellation to garner a few votes. It is not only a demeaning and disgusting tactic by politicians to entertain such baseless issues but it also encourages irresponsible behavior among those who got entangled into it to begin with.
Senators (like Elizabeth Warren) and Congressional Representatives (like Ayanna Pressley) should focus their efforts and attention on solving real problems facing our nation and communities such as affordable, good education, solving crime and drug issues and illegal immigration.”
It is truly repulsive to hear Senator Warren and Rep. Pressley resort to “economic, racial, gender and generational issues” in attempting to seek President Biden’s pen to have the student loan cancelled.
Don’t they believe in an “IOU” document that was willingly and knowingly agreed to by the borrowers? In this case, the students who borrowed loans from the government and promised to pay them back. It is not taxpayer’s fault for their dereliction of their commitment. Besides, the bulk of the student loans owed to the government are borne by those who are in well paid positions and do not need the government’s forgiveness.
Waiving the student loan repayment during the pandemic period by the Trump and Biden administrations is fully justifiable. But to extend this or altogether forgive this now is nothing but totally irresponsible and uncalled for especially when our nation’s budget deficit is scaling new highs every second. The potential addition of $2 trillion more to it is just not what we need now.
Let those who borrowed the money willingly repay it without grudge and not be spoiled by politicians.
Instead of clamoring for student loan forgiveness, the elected officials should go after institutions of higher learning that churn out graduates with degrees and programs that can never be a true breadwinner.
Both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Ed Markey accomplished nothing on their junkets to Taiwan. They only exacerbated tension between the U.S. and China. First, the Democrats harp on climate change. China is one of the largest producers of coal fired fossil fuel. China is building about 50 new coal fired plants a year. China has vowed to cease cooperation with the U.S. on climate change. Secondly, our open border policy is allowing drug cartels to smuggle fentanyl and other lethal drugs across our border. Cartels purchase drug ingredients manufactured in China. China, now, refuses to work with the U.S. in the area of drug trafficking. I would call Pelosi’s and Markey’s trips a waste of time and further demonstrated a lack of leadership.
