Orange Line worst between North Station, Sullivan Square, MBTA GM says

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said the slowest part of the Orange Line is between North Station and Sullivan Square in Charlestown, where the most construction needs to happen before restrictions are lifted.

Poftak told the MBTA Board of Directors Thursday that one of the 10 remaining slow zones could be gone by the end of the month, but others will remain well into December, two months after the 30-day shutdown concluded.

“I know that it has been inconvenient for our customers, and I regret that, but I have also seen progress,” he said. “I travel on the Orange Line frequently, from Forest Hills into the city, and I can attest to that my ride is certainly faster.”

“We’re being challenged in particular in the area between North Station and Sullivan Square,” he said, particularly on the southbound side.

Poftak said crews were out Thursday inspecting the stretch of track between North Station Portal to Community College, to determine whether the 10 mph speed restriction there could be lifted.
