Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson catching on quickly in training camp – Boston Herald

FOXBORO — Were it not for Rhamondre Stevenson, the potential loss of a longtime captain and offensive pillar should feel much worse for the Patriots.

And yet through two practices, Stevenson, who might replace James White as the team’s third-down back, looks perfectly suited for the role.

The former fourth-round pick leads the team in catches during team drills and is tied for the lead in targets through two practices. Stevenson said he cut weight this offseason and is now running at 225 pounds. He previously shared he spent much of spring honing his skills as a pass catcher and pass protector.

Stevenson caught 14 of 18 passes as a rookie for 123 yards. His work since then is now paying off.

“Definitely, I feel a lot more comfortable running routes and catching the football,” Stevenson said Thursday. “I did a lot of that: running routes, getting better with my hands, pass protection.”
