WESTON — The turnaround at Rivers is complete.

Maxwell Stevelman threw for three touchdowns while Kalyl Lindsey corralled a pair of touchdown receptions as Rivers touched off an impressive season with a 27-9 win over Canterbury to claim the Moose Curtis Bowl on Saturday afternoon in Weston.

The win caps off an 8-1 year for Rivers, an impressive mark when considering it went winless just five years ago followed a few years later with a 2-6 mark.

“A bunch of us were brought here back in ninth grade for this moment right here,” Stevelman said. “I am just so happy we could do it for the coaching staff and the seniors.”

For Rivers coach Randdy Lindsey, the win was the culmination of what he and his staff set out for when he hired in the spring of 2020.

“We bring resiliency and we just fight,” Lindsey said. “It means a lot to me personally but it’s just terrific for the kids and school as well. This is what we were going for and we got it done.”

Rivers struck first on its opening drive as on fourth down Stevelman connected with Lindsey on a wheel route for a 29-yard score to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.

Rivers defense stepped up midway through the second quarter. Coming off the edge, Brendan Poirier hit Nick Caro as he threw, sputtering the ball up into the air. Linebacker Gregory Canning swooped in, picked off the pass, and went 63 yards for the pick six.

Canterbury got on the scoreboard late in the half on a 51-yard touchdown reception by Johnny Williamson but Lindsey’s second touchdown reception with 30 seconds remaining in the stanza pushed Rivers lead to 20-7 at the break.

In the second half, the Red Wings defense was relentless as they sacked Caro four times while Amir Lindsey added a pick in the end zone.

Amir Lindsey’s 12-yard touchdown reception with 11:51 remaining pushed the Red Wings lead to 27-7 and all but ended the contest.
