Where did the summer go? It seems like yesterday that we were dreaming up our revenge vacations and buying the first concert tickets we’d purchased since COVID came along.
I’m not sure about you, but I’m not quite ready for it to be all over. There are still a few weeks left, and I’ve got a bucket list of thing s— stylish, joyful, and lighthearted things — to do before summer shuts down.
Don a fancy kaftan and big wide-brim hat at a pool somewhere. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a friend’s or a rooftop pool/bar—a literal watering hole, if you will. You’re going to need a pool as a backdrop to your fabulous outfit—the likes of a Costa Smeralda’s silk/cotton maxi kaftan ($495 on paxphilomena.com) in vivid emerald ikat, with hand-beaded tassels. Top it off with Melissa Odabash’s Jemima Wide-Brim Floppy Beach Hat ($136 on neimanmarcus.com) with a wide floppy brim.
Blend up some homemade piña coladas and sip them out of a vintage coup. It’s easy: Add a cup and a half of ice, 2 ounces each of pineapple juice and coconut cream, a half of a cup of frozen pineapple, and 2 ounces of rum. Blend until smooth. Garnish with fresh pineapple slices.
Soak up some end-of-summer sunsets. Skies streaked with fluorescent pink and bright purples are a lot more comfortable and soothing to gawk at in warm weather than in February, so when you spot one, drop what you’re doing and enjoy it.
Throw an easy (and tiny) cocktail soirée. No need to stress over this one. Just make it impromptu, and tell each pal to bring the makings for one type of cocktail. They can each play bartender of the libations they brought. Throw on some tunes, put out some glasses, ice, and some chips and dip, and you’ve got everything you need for an interactive and no-frills shindig.
Dinner on your deck. Eating al fresco is one of the seasonal things I miss most once fall’s chill sets in.
Wear white. Yes, yes — the rule outlawing white after Labor Day is a stupid and outdated one that nobody follows anyway. But there’s something extra luxurious about wearing something white, loose, and flowy in the heat. So pull on something like the all-cotton Frill cotton dress ($119.99 on shop.mango.com). The midi length, ruffled maxi design, and thin straps are as comfy and as summery as it gets.
Head to a friend’s summer house for the weekend. It isn’t too late to plan a beachside or country jaunt, so you’ll have memories of bucolic relaxation to spare once these snow days start rolling in. And don’t forget the host/ess gift. It’s no secret how much I insist on bringing them; after all, it’s the least you can do to make sure you get invited back again. Something to make their house smell amazing is always very much appreciated. Right now I’m loving the Ocean Mist & Sea Salt diffuser by Nest New York x Gray Malin ($46, sephora..com), which brings fresh, sweet wafts of white tea and coconut — the essence of summer while it lasts.
