What to wear to a job interview

Q: I have my first job interview back in an office soon. The company seems casual. Do I really have to wear a suit?

A: You know the saying about how you should always dress for the job above your current one? Do that. If the company seems super casual and you show up in an interview suit from head to toe, you’re communicating that you take the job seriously. If you show up in casual Friday wear like khakis and you look polished from head to toe, that works, too.

It really depends on the job and the company. If you’re interviewing for a C-suite role in a financial services firm, then a navy or black suit is your go-to. If you’re interviewing for a marketing role in a startup where people wear hoodies, jeans and sneakers, forgo the suit.

Focus on looking sharp and feeling confident instead of uncomfortable in your clothing.
